Our promise - to be kind to the earth, it's people and the environment.

The journey of The Library began in 2004 as the owners prepared for the arrival of their first child. At this time when the health (and happiness) of an expectant mum is so important, simple pleasures such as dining out and takeaway meals present new obstacles where prepared food comes with a degree of risk and uncertainty.Fast forward 9 months or so, and whilst the needs of a nursing Mum and developing baby are appreciated they can so easily be neglected when the desire to eat nutritiously comes second to basic needs such as sleep (and sanity).A year or so later as baby assumes the role of demanding and energetic toddler with an inability to sit still for more than 5 minutes, it is easy to see why many parents do not eat out until their children are at school (although there-in lies a new complexity). However, in the case of the owners of this establishment, like so many other parents in today's society, the simple pleasure of dining out became exceedingly difficult when their newest member of the household presented signs of food allergies and intolerances. It was this personal experience that inspired The Library, somewhere that caters to everyone regardless of age, diet or lifestyle. A place where guests feel welcome and staff enjoy working. Somewhere the ambience is relaxing and the food is nutritious and delicious. A place like no other..

FIRST CAFE/RESTAURANT IN NZ TO GET GOLD!!! The Library has a strong commitment and vision of eco-sustainability. From the outset, the building itself presented a unique opportunity to 'recycle' a magnificent piece of history and restore it to its former glory. The Library's purchasing criteria is based on environmental policies, fair trade and sustainable practices of its suppliers. With a predominantly organic menu incorporating seasonal and local produce, The Library provides a portal to communicate the story of businesses and individuals that have embraced organic living and are on a journey of eco-sustainability. The objective is not only to promote and support like minded people and businesses but also to encourage others to follow.Vegetable-based inks, recycled paper, environmentally friendly packaging and consumables, organic and/or bio-degradable products have been utilised where possible. Disposable items are used sparingly and bio-degradable products are used where appropriate including bin liners, plates and cutlery. Cleaning and washing products are non-toxic with alcohol free soaps and sanitisers available in the bathroom, kitchen and dining areas.
