A Tribute to Grandmothers - 16 August 2008
This evening came about because of Maria Humphries, a pro-active resident of Onehunga and Director of the Post Graduate Studies in Social Enterprise at Waikato Management School.  Maria, new to the area, found The Library Cafe to be a wonderful place to bring her grandchildren & have a great coffee with friends & colleagues. Aware of Qiujing’s wonderful work on The Grandmothers Tribe, Maria was intrigued by the separate ventures of these fellow Onehunga residents & wondered how a connection between their projects could enhance one another & the community. The two projects are of course, The Library Café (educating the community about organic & sustainable living) & Borderless Production’s with their successful made for purpose fundraising film - A Grandmother’s Tribe.

Proceeds of the ticket sales for tonight go directly to The Stephen Lewis Trust to support Grandmothers in Africa. The amount raised was over $1,000 which was  significantly increased thanks to the contributions of a number of The Library Café’s suppliers who offered their products either free of charge or at cost.

An addtitional $1,500 was raised by way of a Gold Coin Donation Massage (kindly donated by Centre of Attention), a BBQ raffle (kindly donated by The Oaks Liquor) and Silent Auction which took place on the night.  These funds raised go directly to The Grandparents Raising Grandchildren Trust – a non-profit organisation helping many Grandparents who are responsible for their grandchildren’s wellbeing.

Thank you to the support of the friends of The Library.

On behalf of Grandparents Raising Grandchildren, (West Auckland) Inc, we would like to thank you, your husband and all who worked so hard to put together a most enjoyable night for all of us. It was obvious that you had all put your heart and soul into this project and it was done with such enthusiasm, joy and good will.   This evening gave some of us a rare occasion to relax and just enjoy being ‘out in the world’ for a change.   I would also like to congratulate the film makers, what a superb thought provoking film, one in a different culture, but with children with all the same needs, to be loved and to feel secure and well looked after – our congratulations to the producers. Thank you once again for the opportunity to take part and to be part of this generous and enjoyable night. God Bless you all.
Margaret Moore, Secretary/Treasurer, West Auckland GRG

I wish to express our heartfelt thanks for the wonderful evening put on by you all last Saturday. Our GRG’s have contacted me to say how appreciative they all were. Many said it was wonderful to get out and become a ‘normal’ grandmother for a change without the cares and worries of the grandchildren.
To be wined and dined was a rare treat. God bless

Warmest, Diane Vivian, National Convenor, Grandparents Raising Grandchildren™ Charitable Trust
